The Petrona Award:  You can read all about this exciting new award for Scandinavian crime fiction at Karen’s Euro Crime website here:

The award is in memory of my dear friend Maxine Clarke, who blogged so beautifully at Petrona, and who did so much to encourage and support other bloggers.

I think I know which of the four shortlisted books Maxine would have chosen to receive this award. I wonder if the judges will agree with me?

This is such a nice idea and an excellent way to remember Maxine Clarke and appreciate her brilliant book reviews and contributions to the world of crime fiction and its fans.
I, for one, would vote for Last Will, as Maxine loved Liza Marklund’s series and the Annika Bengtzon character — and, this one deals with science as a main focus.

In addition to that, I’ve read Black Skies. Although I much appreciate Arnaldur Indridason’s books — I buy them; that’s enough proof — and I know that Maxine did, I’d still vote for Annika’s story.

  4. Norman Price says:

Kathy, I agree. I feel that this first award should definitely go to Last Will.
Annika Bengtzon was one of Maxine’s favourite characters and the scientific link in Last Will is the clincher for me.

Norman, I wonder if Liza Marklund knows how much Maxine Clarke liked her Annika Bengtzon character and series, giving the books rave reviews. I also wonder if she knows how many fans of her books were gained from the readers of the Petrona website.
I sometimes wonder if someone should write to her publisher to them know about this and about the new award, which honors Maxine’s contributions to the world of crime fiction, and which nominates Last Will.

Hi Kathy, Liza Marklund’s publishers are very chuffed with the nomination for the Petrona and have already been in touch re submitting books for next year’s award. I hope Liza M knows how much Maxine liked her books, certainly her translator Neil Smith does. I’ll certainly pass on your comments to her UK publicist. best wishes, Karen

  6. Norman Price says:

Kathy good idea I will pass your thoughts on to Karen.

  7. kathy d. says:

Thanks Karen and Norman. It would be the right thing to do to let Liza Marklund’s publisher know about Maxine’s love for the Annika Bengtzon series and character — and about all of the readers who avidly sought the books after reading their praises at Petrona.
